He has taught painting classes and workshops for adults in community and educational settings for over 35 years. His experience includes a wide variety of media: watercolor, acrylic, oil, pastel and collage. Multiple painting awards have been won both locally and nationally. Mel is a member of the Ohio Watercolor Society. No matter what the medium he employs, his tendency is to start in soft washy tones of color. Many of his paintings utilize thin collage material which he generally tries to disguise so that hidden images appear to the viewer over time. As a retired architect, buildings and industrial structures quite often appear in his paintings. A patron once noted, regarding an abstract, a love of drawing is evident in his paintings. That is the kind of statement that keeps him going. Juror Statement I was pleased to be asked to jury this year's Medina County Art League show as it presented an opportunity to see some excellent art. The large variety of media made the judging process challenging and enjoyable. An early walk through the entire show offered a general sense of the entire 101 pieces comprising the show. I viewed every item many times at close range and from a distance. With only 8 pieces receiving awards, many fine works were necessarily excluded. My usual method for determining awards includes numerous criteria: composition, the juxtaposition of various elements, technique, and the ability to handle the medium. I ask "Does a work make me come back to it more often than other pieces." "Does the work grab my attention and make me think?" With this process in place, the screening begins. Since I have been eliminated many times from competitions scrutinized by judges, I remind all entrants that judging is always subjective, influenced by the judges' tastes, education, and at times, personal bias. However the outcome, keep painting. Juror Awards Best of Show "Among the Shadows" by Laurie Musser Digital Pencil Drawing First Place "The Barn in the Park" by Rick Williams Acrylic Second Place "Blue Tumbler" by Peggy Stover Watercolor Third Place "Babinga Goblet" by Robert Kelley Woodworking Honorable Mentions "The Promise of Spring" by Carol Kessel Colored Pencil/Gel Pen "Looming" by Betty Siska Pastel "Dreamscape II" by Linda Kenski Alcohol Ink on Yupo "Lion of the Tribe of Judah" by Barb Zimmerman Acrylic Collage Awards

Reception Saturday, February 4, 2023 from 1-3pm Our Juror Awards Our Juror We would like to thank this year’s juror for judging this exhibit: Mary Urbas Mary Urbas has been the Gallery Director/Exhibition Curator/Installation Designer for The Gallery at Lakeland Community College in Kirtland since 2005. Mary has over 43 years of experience in the professional art world as a gallery owner, curator, teacher, consultant, and an award winning exhibiting Fiber Artist. She received her BFA from the Cleveland Institute of Art with a major in Textile Design and Silk Screen Printing, with minors in Weaving and Printmaking. She was the Gallery Manager and Shipping/Receiving Manager at Sylvia Ullman's American Crafts Gallery in Cleveland, for 17+ years. She opened her own gallery in 1997, called The Gallery in Chagrin Falls that featured contemporary Fine Art and Fine Crafts. She became the Gallery Curator and Assistant Director at the Valley Art Center (in Chagrin Falls 2001- 2005), teaching classes to adults and summer art camps for children. Mary teaches a class at The Cleveland Institute of Art, Artists Archives of the Western Reserve, Lakeland Community College, Notre Dame College, Ursuline College and The Valley Art Center: Professional Practices/The Business of Art for Artists: Presenting and Promoting Your Art”; that is designed as a first-step towards helping the developing, as well as established artist make a successful transition from creating art to presenting and promoting it... Mary also enjoys teaching young artists Textile Design and World Art through after-school and summer art camp programs at various art centers. Juror Statement It is always a privilege and a challenge to award prizes to work submitted to an art exhibition. I would like to express my thanks to all those who entered work. I know from long experience what it is like to submit my own artworks into similar shows, and how nerve-wracking the process can be. I also understand and appreciate the investment of time and passionate interest that is bound up in any art object or project. I really enjoyed spending time with the artworks. When I jury a show, I look for four things: Unique idea: Something that is your very own, maybe a different twist on an old theme. Creative design: A composition that balances all of the elements of design... line, value, color, and shape.... using repetition, texture, pattern to evoke a mood. Execution: Knowledge of the broad range of the medium and expertise in application, which only comes with practice, practice, practice.... Presentation: Using the appropriate materials to enhance the work. Judging the show for prizes presented me with an opportunity to view new and compelling art from member artists of the Medina County Art League; artists that I was not familiar with. I took pleasure in making these new discoveries. - Mary Urbas Awards Best of Show "Leaving Home" by Donna Bargar Watercolor People's Choice "Gentle Giant" by Karen Marten Watercolor First Place "Something's Afoot" by Judy Hohl Oil on Canvas Second Place "After the Fog Cleared" by Betty Siska Pastel Third Place "Pick of the Day" by Cindy Craft Watercolor Honorable Mentions "She Dreams of Flying" by Carol Klingel Acrylic on Canvas "Hive" by Teenia Geig Mixed Media "Agricultural Graveyard" by Craig Staufer Oil on Linen Panel "Summer of Life" by Janet Baran Acrylic

Throughout his career, Charles Basham has become more and more attuned to the subtle changes in weather and atmosphere. In his pastels and oil paintings, the energy and impact of light is realized in harmonized color whose saturation and temperature have been pushed and raised beyond previous limits. In doing so, he has captured dramatic and compelling moments of morning and evening light over the farmlands of the Midwest and the marshes and beaches of the low country in South Carolina. He received his B.F.A. and M.F.A. from Kent State University in his native state of Ohio, where he still resides on the family farm where he grew up. He has enjoyed much acclaim for his visually stimulating and emotionally charged landscapes . 2021-2022 Member Year Programming MAY MEMBERS MEETING Helen Wilson MAY 23, 2022 @ 7pm @ ROOT COMMUNITY ROOM In May we welcomed Helen Wilson. From Helen’s Website “As an artist, I have found paper collage to be both a language and a personal journey. My art is not just about creating but it is always about communicating. After trying several different artistic methods, I discovered a wonderfully expressive language in paper collage. My goal is to be myself and to be true to my own expression. I enjoy experimenting and trying new things. I try to challenge myself with the thought,” what if….” Most of my pieces are made up of a variety of papers along with acrylics, inks, and metal gilding.“ We hope you join us in person or on Zoom.
